- Aluminum Metal Business Unit
This business unit makes use of a broad network built up over many years to source primary aluminum and other materials from aluminum refineries around the world (Australia, Brazil and Indonesia) in which Mitsubishi Corp. owns a stake as the parent company. Its primary products include LME standard primary aluminum, A356 new ingots and alloys (the raw material in aluminum car wheels) and billets (building material).
Alumina is refined from bauxite and then subject to electrolysis that further refines it to produce aluminum of more than 99.7% purity. This "primary aluminum" serves as a raw material for rolling, extrusion, forging and casting. Primary aluminum is the most widely used aluminum raw material and is an international commodity with a highly liquid market. It is traded on the London Metal Exchange (LME) and other futures markets.
In Japan, we hold aluminum ingots inventories in major ports around the country to enable deliveries as required by our customers. We also provide hedging services for constantly changing ingots prices. Meanwhile, we are working in close coordination with the international network of Mitsubishi Corp. to respond to the growing demand in China and Southeast Asian countries by enhancing our Asian supply systems.
